In the last 2 years midst of this pandemic, the two most vital lessons were learned. Darling — Health is everything and number two — what you eat is that the most significant factor to stay healthy. Everyone got crazy — cooking dishes and making turmeric and amla teas to spice up the immunity to fight covid.

Whether you eat meat, vegetables, fruits, food, or dairy — digestion plays an important role within the body. It’s this process that affects the metabolism and promotes weight gain or loss.

In this part, we’ll try to see the scientific reasons behind some myths and beliefs associated with food — how, when, and why to eat or to not eat. Let us begin!

1. Eating before Sunset — sounds crazy? Relate this to Intermittent Fasting — the diet mantra occurring for few years. If one finishes the last meal before sunset i.e. 6 to 7 pm and also the next meal is in the morning after 10 am — it gives a 16-hour break to your digestion system.

In these 16 hours, dropped blood insulin levels help burn fat. The inner system repairs itself by removing the waste materials from cells. This process helps improve metabolism and help weight loss.

2. Fasting once or twice per week — Myth — the one who observes fast is going to be free from all maladies and can possess the energy. Indeed!

When people failed to understand the scientific reasons, or our forefathers weren’t able to explain it in a very way — nowadays 3D and 4D videos do — they’d often link it to religion and make it a practice to follow.

The same logic applies here — often we eat stupidly, without giving a correct break to our digestion system. Nowadays as everyone seems to be busy making money — most of the time they like a takeout instead of cooking. Eating out on weekends has become a requirement for this generation.

Ayurveda explains the principle behind fasting. In the ancient Indian medical system, the fundamental explanation for many diseases was seen because of the accumulation of toxic materials within the gastrointestinal system. To stay healthy — regular cleansing of toxic materials was done by fasting. When your digestive organs get rest, the metabolism doubles, and cells are regenerated.

3. Avoid taking a shower after a meal — The digestion process needs lots of energy and amount of blood flow toward the stomach to begin the method. Taking shower right after a meal can interfere with this process if the food you had isn’t digested properly — it can cause multiple problems. It is always suggested to attend a minimum of 30–45 minutes.

4. Sit and drink water — often we forget this and drink water while walking, standing, shopping, etc. Drinking while standing can cause indigestion. Your muscles and systema nervosum are more relaxed after you are sitting, and it helps the nerves to digest any food or liquid easily.

5. Start with Spice & End with Sweet: In most Indian families and in restaurants, the sweet dish is usually served at the end of the meal. The science behind this can be — while spicy things activate the digestive juices by ensuring the digestion process goes on smoothly. Sweets pull down this process and hence are always recommended to be taken as the last item.

Share your belief /tradition with me and I will try to find a scientific answer to it.
